ESTONIAN CHAMBER OF ORIENTAL DANCE

BELLY DANCE

The terms 'Oriental Dance' and 'Belly Dance' have been given different meanings over the course of time. Historically, dances that have been called 'belly dance' originate mainly from the Mediterranean and the Middle East and North Africa regions, sometimes from even further areas. Belly Dance refers both to traditional social dances of these regions as well as stage dances based on them, which have in common the emphasized movements of the hips, buttocks, abdomen, chest and shoulders. Many of the dances defined as Belly Dance are relatively new, and their various forms originate from all around the world in addition to the regions mentioned above. Today, belly dancing has become a popular form of entertainment, leisure and art practiced by millions of women and men around the world.
